Hebrews 1:4, New International Version

“So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.”

The opening verses of Hebrews set the tone for the entire letter. The writer begins by reminding us that God has always been a speaking God. In the past, He spoke to His people through the prophets many times and in many ways. Every message, every vision, and every prophecy was part of His unfolding plan. But now, in these last days, God has spoken to us in His Son. What the prophets pointed toward in pieces, Jesus fulfills in fullness. He is not just another messenger—He is the message Himself.

These verses describe Jesus with words that lift Him above all others. He is the heir of all things, the one through whom God made the universe. When we look at Him, we are not simply seeing a great teacher or miracle worker; we are seeing the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being. In Christ, the invisible God has made Himself visible. He is the final and perfect revelation of who God is.

But the passage doesn’t stop with who Jesus is—it also tells us what He has done. He sustains all things by His powerful word, and after making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. That image of sitting down is powerful. It shows us that the work of salvation is complete. Unlike the priests of the Old Testament who offered sacrifices again and again, Jesus offered Himself once for all, and then He sat down because nothing more was needed.

Hebrews 1:1–4 reminds us that our faith rests not on shifting ideas or human effort, but on the finished work and unchanging person of Jesus Christ. He is supreme, He is sufficient, and He is seated on the throne. Whatever struggles or questions we may carry today, we can look to Him with confidence. God has spoken clearly, finally, and perfectly in His Son. Our call now is to listen, trust, and follow the One who is the radiance of God’s glory.
