Many people today live with the assumption that the physical world is the only world that truly matters. If something can be seen, measured, studied, touched, or explained naturally, then it is treated as real. But if something cannot be observed with our physical senses, many assume it must be unimportant, unknowable, or imaginary. Scripture gives us a very different understanding of reality. The Bible teaches that the physical world is real, but it is not the whole picture.

The Christian worldview begins with God. Before there was matter, there was God. Before there was time, there was God. Before there were stars, mountains, oceans, animals, or human beings, there was the eternal God who spoke creation into existence. That means visible reality is not ultimate. God is ultimate. Everything we see exists because of the God we cannot see with natural eyes.

Hebrews 11:3 reminds us that “what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” That is a powerful statement. The visible world came into being by the command of the invisible God. Faith does not reject reality. Faith receives reality as God reveals it. Biblical faith does not make us less grounded, less thoughtful, or less serious about the world around us. It teaches us that reality is larger than what human senses can observe.

Colossians 1:16 also tells us that all things were created in Christ, through Christ, and for Christ, including things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. This means the spiritual realm is not fantasy, folklore, or superstition. It is part of the world Scripture reveals. At the same time, it is not eternal in the way God is eternal, and it is not an independent realm existing beside Him. The spiritual realm is created, and because it is created, it exists under the authority of the Creator.

That truth gives us important guardrails. We should not ignore the spiritual realm as though Scripture does not speak about it. But we should also not approach it with fear, speculation, or unhealthy fascination. The unseen is not less real simply because it cannot be naturally observed, but the unseen is also not greater than Christ. All things, visible and invisible, were created through Him and for Him. No spiritual reality exists outside His authority.

So as believers, we must learn to see life through the truth God has revealed. We do not deny what is visible, but we also do not reduce all of life to what is visible. We live with humility, knowing there are dimensions of reality we do not fully perceive. We live with discernment, testing everything by the Word of God. And we live with confidence, because reality may be larger than what we can see, but it is not larger than the authority of Jesus Christ.
