“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

The spiritual world is a subject that many Christians struggle to handle well. Some ignore it almost completely, acting as though angels, demons, temptation, deception, and spiritual warfare are not significant parts of biblical teaching. Others go to the opposite extreme and become overly fascinated with the unseen world, building ideas on stories, speculation, fear, or personal experience rather than Scripture. Both errors can leave believers unprepared, confused, or distracted from Christ.

Scripture gives us a better path. The Bible does not tell us to pretend the spiritual world is imaginary, symbolic, or irrelevant. God’s Word speaks clearly about spiritual realities, and because God has chosen to reveal these things, His people should not ignore them. To dismiss the unseen world entirely is not wisdom. It is failing to receive a category of truth that Scripture itself teaches.

At the same time, Scripture also warns us not to believe everything we hear. First John 4:1 tells believers to test the spirits to see whether they are from God. That means spiritual discernment is not gullibility. We are not called to accept every story, every claim, every experience, or every teaching simply because it sounds spiritual. Experience is not our highest authority. Stories do not create doctrine. Speculation must not be preached as certainty. Fear should never become the fuel of Christian teaching.

This is why the Word of God must govern how we think about the spiritual world. Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans because they received the message with eagerness while examining the Scriptures daily to see if what they heard was true. That balance matters. They were not cynical, but they were not careless. They were eager to receive truth, but they still tested everything by Scripture. That is the kind of discernment the church needs today.

As we think about spiritual realities, we need clear biblical guardrails. What Scripture clearly teaches, we should proclaim with confidence. What Scripture implies, we should handle with humility. What Scripture does not reveal, we should not build doctrine upon. Those guardrails protect us from both spiritual arrogance and spiritual confusion. They keep us from ignoring what God has said, and they keep us from claiming more than God has revealed.

The church does not need to be bizarre to be biblical. We do not need to chase mysteries, feed fear, or become fascinated with darkness. We need to walk in truth, humility, discernment, and confidence in Jesus Christ. The spiritual world is real, but Christ is supreme. Spiritual warfare is real, but the victory of Jesus is greater. The unseen realm matters because Scripture reveals it, but our hearts must remain fixed on the One who reigns over all things visible and invisible.
