Hebrews 3:4, New International Version
“For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.”
In Hebrews 3:1–6, the writer once again draws our attention to the supremacy of Christ. He begins by calling his audience “holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling,” and urges them to “fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.” It is a powerful reminder that the Christian life is not about fixing our eyes on our circumstances, our struggles, or even our own performance—but on Jesus. He is both the One sent from God (the apostle) and the One who represents us before God (the high priest).
The passage then draws a comparison between Jesus and Moses. For the Jewish audience, Moses was the great leader of Israel, the one through whom God delivered the law and led the people out of slavery. He was a faithful servant in God’s house. But the writer makes it clear: as honored as Moses was, Jesus is greater. Moses was a servant in the house, but Christ is the Son over the house. The builder of the house always has greater honor than the house itself. This shows us that while Moses pointed to God’s work, Jesus fulfills it.
This comparison would have been striking for the original audience, but it is just as important for us today. We, too, are often tempted to elevate people—whether leaders, traditions, or even ourselves—above Christ. But the writer reminds us that our ultimate allegiance and devotion belong to Jesus alone. He is not merely a faithful servant but the Son, and the house belongs to Him. Our confidence rests not in human leaders but in the eternal Son of God.
Another key point in this passage is identity. The writer says, “We are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.” This is both an assurance and a challenge. We are God’s dwelling place, His people, His household. But that identity calls us to perseverance. To be part of His house is to hold firmly to our faith, to keep clinging to the hope we have in Christ no matter what trials come.
This text reminds us that the Christian life is a matter of focus. Where our thoughts are fixed, our hearts will follow. When we fix our eyes on Jesus—greater than Moses, greater than angels, greater than any earthly leader—we find the strength to endure and the confidence to persevere. He is the faithful Son, and in Him, we are secure as God’s house.
So let us lift our eyes above the distractions and uncertainties of this world and fix them on Christ. He is not just a figure from history but the living Son who reigns over His house today. And as we hold firmly to Him, we find both our identity and our hope unshakable.
