Nehemiah 6:3, New International Version

“So I sent messengers to them with this reply: ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?’”

Nehemiah 6 brings us to a critical moment in the rebuilding process. The wall is nearly complete, and the progress is undeniable. But as the work draws closer to completion, the intensity of opposition increases. The enemy shifts tactics—from mockery and threats to distraction, deception, and intimidation. This chapter reminds us that when God’s work is close to breakthrough, the pressure to lose focus often grows stronger.

Sanballat and his allies repeatedly try to pull Nehemiah away from the work by inviting him to meet. On the surface, it sounds reasonable. But Nehemiah discerns their true intent—they are trying to harm him and stop the progress. His response is simple but powerful: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.” He refuses to be distracted. This is a lesson we all need. Not every opportunity is from God, and not every invitation deserves our attention. Staying focused requires discernment and discipline.

When distraction doesn’t work, the enemy turns to intimidation. False accusations are spread in an attempt to create fear and pressure Nehemiah into compromising. But Nehemiah does not give in. Instead, he responds with truth and prayer: “Now strengthen my hands.” He doesn’t try to defend himself endlessly or prove himself to others. He entrusts the situation to God and keeps moving forward. Fear loses its power when our confidence is rooted in the Lord.

The opposition even attempts to use deception from within, urging Nehemiah to act in a way that would compromise his integrity. But Nehemiah recognizes that obedience to God matters more than personal safety or public opinion. He refuses to take a step that would dishonor the Lord, even if it seems like the easier path. This is what it looks like to lead with integrity—choosing what is right, even when it is difficult.

Despite all the pressure, the wall is completed in just fifty-two days. The result is unmistakable. Even the enemies recognize that the work was accomplished with the help of God. When we stay focused, remain faithful, and refuse to compromise, God brings His work to completion in His way and in His timing. What seemed impossible becomes a testimony of His power.

Nehemiah 6 challenges us to examine our own lives. What distractions are pulling us away from what God has called us to do? What voices are creating fear or doubt? Like Nehemiah, we are called to stay focused, stand firm, and trust that God will strengthen our hands for the work ahead. When we do, we not only finish what He has called us to do—we reflect His faithfulness in the process.
