Malachi 1:5, New International Version
“You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!”
The book of Malachi begins with a message that might surprise us: “I have loved you,” says the Lord (Malachi 1:2). At a time when the people of Israel were doubting God’s faithfulness and questioning His care, He started by reminding them of His enduring love. This wasn’t a shallow, emotional sentiment — it was a declaration rooted in history. God points back to His choosing of Jacob over Esau, not because of merit, but because of His sovereign grace. His love for His people wasn’t based on their performance — it was based on His covenant.
But the people responded with doubt: “How have you loved us?” That question reveals a lot. When life becomes hard or when God doesn’t seem to be answering the way we expect, we can easily fall into the same mindset. We start measuring God’s love by our circumstances. But Malachi’s message reminds us that God's love is not proven by ease or comfort—it’s proven by His faithfulness. He had preserved Israel despite their failures, and He had remained committed to them, even when they turned away.
God contrasts His treatment of Israel with that of Edom, the descendants of Esau. While Edom would try to rebuild after judgment, God declares that their efforts would come to nothing. This isn’t about favoritism—it’s about God's sovereign plan. Israel had a purpose as His chosen people, and despite their rebellion, God’s love was still at work in their story. His love wasn’t fragile. It was faithful, patient, and persistent.
For us today, this passage is a powerful reminder that God’s love does not give up on His people. When we’re tempted to doubt His care, we need to look back—not just at what He’s done for Israel, but at the cross of Christ. That’s where His love is most clearly displayed. Just like Israel, we haven’t earned His favor. And yet, He calls us His own. His love is steady even when our faith wavers. That’s a love we can rest in, trust in, and live from. God’s love doesn’t let go.
