Hebrews 1:1-2, New International Version
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
Many Christians wonder if God still speaks today. The good news is that He does! While we may not hear an audible voice from heaven, God is always communicating with His people in powerful and personal ways. Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us that in the past, God spoke through the prophets, but now He has spoken to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Today, God continues to speak through His Word, His Spirit, and the circumstances of our lives, guiding us in truth and drawing us closer to Him.
One of the primary ways God speaks is through Scripture. The Bible is God’s inspired Word, given to us for instruction, encouragement, and direction. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 declares, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." When we read and meditate on His Word, we hear His voice clearly. Every page of Scripture reveals His character, His promises, and His will for our lives. The more we immerse ourselves in the Bible, the more we recognize His voice speaking to our hearts.
God also speaks through the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised in John 16:13, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." The Holy Spirit dwells within every believer, bringing conviction, wisdom, and peace. Sometimes, God’s voice comes as a gentle prompting, an inner knowing, or a deep sense of direction. When we cultivate a life of prayer and sensitivity to the Spirit, we become more attuned to His leading.
Another way God speaks is through circumstances and other believers. He can use situations in our lives—both challenges and blessings—to guide and shape us. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord, and He will direct our paths. Additionally, God often speaks through the wise counsel of other Christians. Proverbs 11:14 says, "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers." God may use a sermon, a conversation, or a word of encouragement from a friend to confirm what He is saying to us.
The key to hearing God is being intentional—spending time in His Word, listening to the Holy Spirit, and seeking His guidance in all things. God is always speaking, but are we making time to listen? As we grow in our relationship with Him, we will begin to recognize His voice more clearly, leading us in the path of truth and drawing us into a deeper walk of faith.
