James 3:18, New International Version

“Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”

In James 3:13–18, we’re given a clear picture of what real, godly wisdom looks like—and how it stands in stark contrast to the wisdom of this world. James asks a pointed question: “Who is wise and understanding among you?” Then he answers it by pointing not to clever words or lofty knowledge, but to a life that backs it up. True wisdom is shown by good deeds done in the humility that comes from a heart aligned with God. In other words, wisdom isn’t just something we say we have—it’s something we live out.

James draws a sharp line between two kinds of wisdom. Earthly wisdom, he says, is marked by envy and selfish ambition. It might look appealing on the surface—driven, assertive, even successful—but underneath it breeds disorder and division. James doesn’t pull any punches when he says this kind of wisdom is unspiritual, even demonic. When our motives are rooted in pride and self-promotion, we’ll never produce the peace that God desires for His people.

In contrast, godly wisdom is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. What a beautiful list—and what a needed reminder for us today. We live in a world that often celebrates harsh opinions, quick retorts, and the loudest voices in the room. But James says real wisdom is seen in gentleness and a willingness to yield when it honors the Lord. It doesn’t stir up strife; it sows peace. And when we live this way, we become peacemakers, planting seeds that bear a harvest of righteousness.

This passage challenges us to look at our hearts and ask: What kind of wisdom are we leaning on? Are our decisions, conversations, and relationships marked by humility and mercy—or by rivalry and self-interest? The difference matters. One kind of wisdom leads to division and brokenness; the other builds up, heals, and honors Christ.

So, let’s ask God to grow in us the kind of wisdom that looks like Jesus. May our lives reflect purity of heart, a love for peace, and a gentle strength that points others to Him. Because at the end of the day, wisdom that comes from heaven won’t make us proud, it will make us more like our Savior. And that’s the greatest testimony we can offer a watching world.
