I just discovered we have unintentionally set a standard of accountability in our household. My daughters have been very diligent over the past years to not allow indecent TV shows or movies when my husband and I weren’t in the room watching with them. I thank God for the conviction of the Holy Spirit that leads us to walk a more holy lifestyle!

It was when my older daughters were gone the other day and my son was finally getting a chance to watch a movie, he had been wanting to see that I realized the blessing of a family that holds each other accountable in their convictions. Imagine my surprise when my son came out to tell me in a nonchalant tone that he wasn’t going to be able to finish the movie they started. When I asked him why, he told me it was because they were showing improper ads. I pressed him for more details, and he shared with me that girls were barely dressed and dancing around on the screen. Oh, how my heart rejoiced! I cupped his face in my hands and kissed him and told him how proud I was of him doing that! Not only did he guard his eyes, but he set a standard for all of his brothers and sisters underneath him! And do you know not one child complained, but rather they all just moved on knowing that is the standard we have as a family.

A couple months ago the Lord really pressed on my heart to begin talking to this same son of ours about the dangers of lust. I had read the book, “Every Young Mans Battle,” and had caught quite a glimpse of what it means to be in a young man’s mind. They had a wonderful example in the book about how the habits we form when we are young do affect our relationships in the future. So, if our young man can’t practice in their early years shutting things off that are inappropriate, how will they ever get ahold of it when they are married? 

Oh, how I thanked God that day for such a wonderful victory in our young son, and how I pray it continues to be a conviction he carries into his adult years so that he may avoid the snare that so many young boys have fallen into!

1 John 2:14, “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.”
