Psalm 36:5-9, Good News Translation
“Lord, your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the skies. Your righteousness is towering like the mountains; your justice is like the depths of the sea. People and animals are in your care. How precious, O God, is your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of your wings. We feast on the abundant food you provide; you let us drink from the river of your goodness. You are the source of all life, and because of your light we see the light.”
Constant. A word that implies the state of something being unchanged. The Good News Translation reads, “Lord, your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the skies. Your righteousness is towering like the mountains; your justice is like the depths of the sea. People and animals are in your care. How precious, O God, is your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of your wings. We feast on the abundant food you provide; you let us drink from the river of your goodness. You are the source of all life, and because of your light we see the light.” (Psalm 36:5-9, GNT)
Two times in the scripture, it mentions our Lord’s constant love. His unchanging love. And a world where everything is constantly changing, it’s a blessing and a beautiful thing to have a constant, unchanging love. It’s a gift that surpasses anything this world has to offer. Though we are entering a time of celebration of our Savior’s birth, let us not just celebrate His birthday, but also, why He came.
Why did Christ come? He came to redeem humanity. Why did He redeem humanity? Love… Constant and unchanging love.
Since before the fall, our Father Has been pursuing humanity. It has never been about religion, but relationship. From the time God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden to now, it has been a relationship. Those sins entered into the heart of man in the garden, and we are born into sin, it is through the Christ child, who became a man, that carried our sins to the cross, and taking on our punishment, that we are redeemed. Constant and unchanging love.
No matter where we are in life, Christ meets us where we are. We are not condemned for our life choices or style but convicted by a constant love that brings a transformation in our lives. John 3:16-17 (NKJV) says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
His constant love brings light to our lives, where there was one darkness. This constant love brings redemption, protection, favor, blessing, healing, strength, peace, and so much more. The greatest gift ever given was the Christ child, fully God, fully man, the perfect Lamb of God, the perfect sacrifice.
The gifts we will receive under our tree pale in comparison to the gift of Jesus Christ, a constant love that pursues us in every moment of every day of our lives. Let us remember these things as we come together to celebrate Christmas with our families.
