Matthew 13:44-46, New Living Translation
"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owed to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!"
Proverbs 2:1-5 (NLT) says, “My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.”
The more we dig and search into God’s Word, the more treasures of wisdom and understanding He will show us, just as we searched and dug for those hidden chocolate eggs, the more we found and received the goodies inside and the more excited we became. That’s how the Lord wants us to approach His Word - with excitement and anticipation. Having such an eagerness to get more of Him that we can hardly contain ourselves.
We could study the Word 24/7, in total of 365 days a year for the rest of our lives on earth and still not uncover all the depths and riches of who God is. He speaks to us through His Word and reveals truths that we can meditate on, memorize, and apply to our lives in different ways depending upon the season of life we are in. His treasures never run out, never grow old, never disappear.
Even when what we read convicts, when it hurts, when it corrects, it is still bringing life and wisdom to our hearts. And what we treasure most is what our hearts will continue to chase after. What we search after, what we value, what thrills us, is what is revealed from our hearts. We can chase after the things of the world, value material possessions or worldly gain. We can get a thrill from sports and entertainment. But none of those things are real treasure.
All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ. As you dig for hidden treasure, you will rejoice as one finds great spoil. Treasure awaits as you find your greatest treasure in Jesus!
When we come to the place in our Christian walk that we realize what a treasure we have in God’s Word, we will no longer be satisfied with what the world offers. We will be willing to give up sleep, television, and social media to spend time with God. We will realize that the excitement of a ballgame, movie, or some other event is nothing compared to the thrill of discovering valuable truth in the Scripture.
Let’s commit ourselves together to dig into the Word and ask God to revive our hearts with the thrill of discovery in His Word. There’s so much truth to be found! What a treasure that is!
