Proverbs 18:21, English Standard Version
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."
I don't agree with the saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." We can all heal from physical wounds, but words that affect us internally are harder to bounce back from. How we use our words is so important. Think about this: God spoke the world into existence...talk about power in words!
Words have the ability to build, heal, and encourage, or to tear down, destroy, and discourage. Thoughtless criticism, harsh gossip, or constant negativity can inflict deep emotional wounds, diminish self-worth, and break relationships.
On the other side, words of affirmation, empathy, and encouragement can inspire change, offer comfort, and create pleasant surroundings.Â
So, how do we use our tongue wisely? Pause Before Speaking: Consider whether your words are necessary, kind, and truthful before expressing them.
Speak Life: Choose language that uplifts others and helps constructive growth.
Just a few things to remember about our words:
Words have creative power: We shape reality, influence environments, and establish relationships simply by what we choose to say. For instance, a judge’s spoken verdict or a doctor’s diagnosis can literally dictate a person's life.
The impact of encouragement vs destruction: Words can break hearts, ruin reputations, and foster despair (bringing "death"), or they can offer hope, validate someone, and foster peace (bringing "life").
Reaping what you sow: The proverb concludes by stating that those who love the tongue will "eat the fruit thereof". This means you will ultimately live with the consequences—either positive or negative—of the verbal patterns you establish. Once it's out of your mouth you can’t take it back.
Remember, just as the tongue can be used as a weapon to destroy through harshness or gossip, it can also be used as a tool to build up, encourage, and heal.
Choose wisely!
