Deuteronomy 8:3, New King James Version

"…Man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord."

"Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!" (Psalms 34:8, NKJV)

The Word of God is power and is life to us! We must be willing to feed ourselves with His truth every day, or we will starve ourselves and our spirits will become weak.

The Word is literally our life. Without daily feeding, we will remain unfulfilled and will begin to look for our meals elsewhere. We will want instant gratification, or “fast food” to fill the void that only God can fill. And when we are done with our “fast food” or our “quick fix”, we may feel immediate satisfaction, but soon after we will desperately be longing for more. Just like physical fast food. It may fill us up temporarily, but it does not have long term nutritional benefits. Only God’s Word can give us the nutrition our spirits crave and need.

So, how can we make sure we are daily feeding ourselves spiritually? We need to read the Word daily. We must be willing to set aside time to do so. Spending time reading scripture will help you to keep your mind on track and keep you focused on the things of God, causing you to dwell on these things rather than the negativity that the world expresses. You will feel much more at ease and will rest in God’s perfect plan and His will, rather than trying to feed yourself with things that will bring you spiritual “sickness” and causing you to go about things your own way. It is also important to spend time in His presence, because it is life-giving water to our spirits. Without His presence, we feel dry and thirsty. We will look to the attention of other things or other people to fill us instead of our creator. He knows what we need the most and serves as our spiritual dietician.

God provides us with His empowering Word that keeps us full and keeps our minds on Him rather than on other things. We will become consumed with the things of God rather than the things of the flesh. As we train ourselves to spend time in the Word and in God’s presence, we will soon begin to naturally crave the things of God, and not the world, which doesn't satisfy us.

As with food, when we are fulfilled with God and His Word, the other food in life that presents itself to us will actually cause us to be in disgust and we will want to remove it from ourselves. Just like when you cut fried or processed foods out of your diet and begin to eat healthily, you begin to be "grossed out" by the food you used to eat and start to feel better physically when you eat healthier. This spiritual junk food is all different variations of our fleshly desires and sin. But as we spiritually feed ourselves, keeping ourselves accountable to God, sin will actually begin to look disgusting to us, and we will realize just how unhealthy it really is for us.

Just like we need food for energy to go about our work or school day, we also need the Word in us so that we have the energy to fight against the enemy. He attacks us at our weakest because that is when we are the most vulnerable to temptations. That is why we must be prepared and well fed. That is why it is so vital to keep ourselves spiritually fed so that we are ready for battle when Satan comes with his schemes.

Jesus paid the price so that we could have this “free meal”, and experience eternal life. God wants you to be satisfied in Him! You can be so full of His goodness in your life that you will have no room for what the world has to offer. Each day you wake up, make sure you choose the right food from your spiritual "menu".

So, keep your heart set on feeding your spirit every day, and you will find yourself with more joy than you have ever had before, because you are filling yourself with the life-giving power of the Word. It will cause you to start living in a new way as well as help you to think in a way that is pleasing to God!
