John 18:38, English Standard Version
“’What is truth?’ Pilate asked…”
“Do you know…?” The facts? The interesting things? The top 100…? Whatever the subject, if a book starts with “Do You Know,” there is always a market for it. If we are humble enough, we will admit there is so much we don’t know—and that we were created to be curious about life and excited to discover its meaning. So, do you know the truth? There is a truth I would love for you to know: the Word of God is active and alive! (Hebrews 4:12) No matter how many times we read it, there is always new inspiration, a direct answer for our time of need, and the joy of assurance.
I am the kind of person whose mind doesn’t easily shut down. I like to think—but I don’t think alone. I think with God. He speaks and guides through the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of truth. The wonderful thing is this: He is not far away but within us. He can and will teach us at all times if we are willing to listen and accept His truth humbly—which means to obey.
There is a movie series, The Lord of the Rings, that I have watched many times. Each time, I notice something new that points me to the Word. In the second film, The Two Towers (2002), there’s a scene about King Théoden of Rohan. At the beginning of his story, he’s under the control of Saruman - the enemy - and appears prematurely aged. His mind is suppressed and used as a puppet in Saruman’s evil scheme. When Théoden is finally set free, he awakens and asks, “Where is my son?” For so long, the darkness of the enemy had blinded him, and he could not see or understand.
Do you know this truth? “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4, ESV)
I have shared with you that the Word of God is active and alive. Do you know the Good News - the Gospel - which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV)
Do you know “…Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4, NLT)
Do you know, “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3–4, NIV)
I pray that you do know!
