Psalm 32:8, English Standard Vision
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
Along the path of learning about God I have learned who I am in Him. Yet one thing I have recognized is this: I do not need to learn how to be humble, because after we have the recognition of who God is and who we are, being humble will be the only result. This has also brought me into the realization that God is who the Word says He is: His way and His thoughts are higher. Even His foolishness is wiser than human wisdom. (Isaiah 55:8-9, 1 Corinthians 1:25) Through this journey of understanding, sometimes it grieves me that there are still many who try to figure out His way or discover a pattern in His work. Some even believe that if they follow a formula or do steps one to three then God will respond to them in the way that desire.
Who am I that I can determine the way God will work? He is all powerful and sovereign! We may believe that God is in our pocket, and He will pay for what we need. Like the slogan of an insurance company, God will take care of it. Let me ask you this question: Did people like Abraham (Genesis 11:27-25:11) or Enoch (Genesis 5:21-24) have any book to read about how God works, and what He may be like? If they did not have any written documents or a Sunday service to attend, how could they know how to please God? The answer is here:
“The Lord said, ‘Shall I keep secret from Abraham [My friend and servant] what I am going to do?’” (Genesis 18:17, AMP)
“And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: ‘Abraham believed in God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.’ He was even called the friend of God.” (James 2:23, NLT)
“Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: ‘All nations will be blessed through you.’ So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” (Galatians 3:7-9, NIV)
“Enoch walked faithfully with God three hundred years … Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” (Genesis 5:22, 24, NIV)
What do they have in common? They follow and trust the Lord with faith. Instead of pretending they know about God, they humbly walk with Him. In this walk, they built a firm relationship with the Lord Himself.
My dear brothers and sisters, the Lord is our counselor (Isaiah 9:6) in all aspects of our life. No man, including you and I, should act like we know how the Lord works and as a result, point others towards us instead of to Jesus. God has already given us the way:
“Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7, AMP)
