2 Corinthians 10:5, New King James Version
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
For quite a period, I felt the need to pay extra caution to the things happening around me. I recognized there was a heavy burden on my soul, coming from various situations involving different brothers and sisters in Christ. It felt like a strong demand for my focus, time, and effort. At one point, I had to stand before a spiritual stop sign and require myself to take a break, so that I could pass the test from the Lord and stand against the schemes of the enemy.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done…” (Genesis 50:20, NIV) This is one of the well-known verses from the life of Joseph, who was sold into Egypt by his own brothers. Yet it was also part of God’s plan. A test was placed before me: would I be dragged down by the enemy’s scheme meant for harm, or would I fix my eyes on Jesus and depend on the One who has already overcome?
Throughout this test, I am thankful that the Holy Spirit was the Guide I sought. He gave me a sense of caution and helped me see beyond my flesh. This is what this article is about—the Word that I learned to embrace in order to be His conqueror.
“…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NKJV)
“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (2 Corinthians 13:5, ESV)
“Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.” (Proverbs 4:23, HCSB)
The Word—Jesus—did not come so that we would be entangled by life in this fallen world. Nor did He come so that we would be condemned because of our imperfection in reflecting God’s image. He came so that we could be forgiven through His mercy, saved through His sacrificial love, and taught through His example of obedience to the Father.
This world is fallen. There is no doubt we will face trouble. Some troubles bring suffering and heartache. There is no escape for anyone—not even for those we love and care for. However, we have One who has already won, and He instructs us to rest in Him and in His victory. So let us enter into His rest. Let His truth set us free—whether from heavy feelings, uneasy thoughts, or challenging circumstances.
Through His truth—the Word that I learned and followed in obedience—I received what He promised: freedom. The heaviness was lifted. Jesus never intended for me to carry the burden on my own shoulders, nor to stand alone defending myself against the enemy’s accusations. Discouragement is not His desire for me. What He desires is for His servant to lean on Him—on His Word—to receive His strength, walk in truth, and stand firm in trust of His faithfulness. Then we come out refined, like gold.
What test are you facing right now? Be courageous, because you can pass the test—any life challenge—with the help of Jesus and the Holy Spirit who walks with you.
