John 6:35, New International Version
“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’”
Weeks ago, a sister in Christ, who is on the praise team with me, opened with just a few words, but they carried a huge inspiration. She said, “I went with my husband to Olive Garden, a well-known restaurant near where I live, and they offered us a basket of garlic breadsticks, as usual. While we were waiting for our main dishes, we enjoyed them very much. Then we recognized that when our meal was brought to the table, our stomachs were already filled up with bread. So, are we filling ourselves with the Daily Bread, the Word, our Lord Jesus?”
Let me tell you, my brothers and sisters, do not wonder if the Lord speaks. As long as you pay attention, you will find Him everywhere at any time! Just like my sister in Christ, who brought her inspiration about the Daily Bread. However, this is also quite dependent on whether we discipline ourselves, desire, and delight in His Word.
Have you opened the Bible, read it, tasted it, studied it, chewed it, meditated on it, swallowed it, and through an action of faith and obedience aligned yourself with the Holy Spirit so He can transform you by renewing your mind? In this way, we digest it, and it nourishes our whole body. Romans 12:2 reminds us of this truth.
Just like my sister in Christ and her husband, they could have chosen to ignore or be uninterested in the bread that was placed on their table and instead keep looking for their main course, the things that attracted them, the things they desired, and the things on their agenda.
You may think, “The bread is free, so I better keep an empty stomach and wait for the meal I worked for and will pay for.” Well, this is the part that you may need to wrestle with. The meal you pay for will never end your days of labor. Instead, the Bread that feeds you will satisfy you, and you will never be hungry again.
I am speaking in a metaphorical way. The Bread I am talking about is the Word, Jesus Himself, who is the way, the truth, and the life. He gives everlasting life freely. You can never work enough, in quality or quantity, to gain it.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, ESV)
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works…” (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)
My family in Christ, are you taking lightly the Bread that is free for you? I am not talking about the bread provided by the restaurant, but the Daily Bread, the Bread of Life, Jesus.
Let’s end with this Scripture, and may you sincerely receive His offer, for God so loved the world:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45, NIV)
