Psalm 90:2, English Standard Version
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
There are different interpretations or explanations about what it means for God to be in control. One of these arguments is this: Do we have freewill, or are we simply a robot? Recently, someone asked me this question, “If God already has the plan and determined how our future will be, does it really matter what I do right now?” In this article, I do not aim to settle every question you may have about this topic. But rather than try to answer that question directly, I hope to reveal more about who God is and by knowing more about Him you may find the answer.
In the process of searching, seeking, and learning about God, I have found out one of the best ways is to understand how His will and ways work by studying the life of Jesus. Jesus is the One who created all things and sustains all things:
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17, NIV)
We were created by Him, “For in him we live and move and have our being…” (Acts 17:28, NIV) Yet every decision we make is still our decision. We can decide to seek, to heed, and to obey His way. Or we can decide to do what we want to do and fail to do what we know is right with God, just as apostle Paul mentioned – following our fleshly desires. (Romans 7:15-20)
We may think we are only making a small decision, and wonder what the big deal is, or maybe we just assume that God will automatically clean up after our mistakes. If we do this, we are either belittling God or viewing ourselves more highly than we should, trying to prove that we do not need God in life. No matter what you think or what the path you are on, I truly want you to know: God is God, His will and His way will not be determined by your decision, your preference, your work, or what you believe. He is God, who created everything from nothing, and He set time into motion. God created everything and everything He created exists within time. But God Himself is beyond time.
He foresees and foreknows the future, but that does not mean that He determines your decisions. He knows your heart and your thoughts and every word on your tongue even before you speak it. (1 Chronicles 28:9, Jeremiah 17:10, Psalm 139: 23-24) God loves you, so He may prepare a person to come alongside you, to cross your path, or give you a direction to make another choice. Yet, you still need to make that choice. It is a choice to accept His guidance or resist His word.
Seek and surrender, no one can win against His power. When we are in His love there is nothing that can harm you. Pay attention, seek His will, and be fruitful!
